§ 29-5. Procedure to change names of streets, boulevards, avenues.

  • (a)

    The parish council establishes the following procedure to have the names of any streets, boulevards and avenues changed: Upon its own motion or upon the written request of any person stating good cause, the parish council in its discretion, may change the name of any street, boulevard or avenue, provided:

    (1)

    An ordinance be introduced, and a public hearing had in connection with the proposed change of name, the ordinance setting forth the name of the street, the proposed change and the boundaries and/or intersections involved in the change;

    (2)

    Specific written reasons must be given for the proposed change when the change of names is requested by anyone other than the parish council;

    (3)

    The proposed changes be submitted and approved by the department of public works and by the department of planning before the ordinance is adopted;

    (4)

    If an ordinance be adopted, it shall be recorded with the clerk of court in and for the parish within sixty (60) days after its effective date;

    (5)

    All costs, including the cost of advertising and filing fee of the clerk of court, shall be borne by the person requesting the change of name of the street, boulevard or avenue.

    (b)

    The appropriate department is hereby authorized and directed to take the necessary steps in order to give legal effect to any ordinance enacted pursuant to this section.
