§ 36-241. Disposition of unclaimed abandoned, lost or stolen bicycles.

  • All bicycles abandoned, lost or stolen and subsequently recovered in the parish which remain unidentified by the owners of said bicycles shall be disposed of by the sheriff's office in the following manner:

    (1)

    Publication of notice. Should the owner of the bicycle not claim the bicycle within seven (7) days of the sheriff's office coming into possession, the sheriff's office shall have published in the parish journal a notice describing the bicycle and further advising where the bicycle may be recovered.

    (2)

    Bicycles unclaimed after publication of notice. Should the bicycle not be claimed within thirty (30) days of publication of notice, then the bicycle may either be sold by the sheriff's office at auction or donated as provided herein:

    a.

    Sale. After complying with the provisions of subsection (a) of this section, the sheriff's office may sell the bicycle at public auction and pay into the parish general fund the net proceeds of said sale less all costs of publication of notice incurred pursuant to subsection (a).

    b.

    After complying with the provisions of subsection (a), the sheriff's office may donate bicycles to children determined by the sheriff's office to be needy or any nonprofit organization which agrees to donate the bicycles to needy children. The sheriff's office will maintain a record of the name of all donees for one (1) year after donation.
