§ 16-102. Definitions.

  • Unless the context specifically indicates otherwise, the following terms shall be defined as follows:

    Health care facilities include, but are not limited to, hospitals, clinics, physicians' offices, outpatient surgery centers, nursing and extended care facilities, podiatry offices, dental offices and clinics, veterinary medical facilities, medical laboratories, home health care services, diagnostic services, mortuaries, and blood collection centers and mobile units.

    Medical wastes include wastes resulting from the operation of a health facility which may consist of, but are not limited to, contaminated dressings; blood collection bags and vials; surgical, obstetrical and laboratory wastes; and needles, hypodermic syringes, and other "sharps."

    Sharps refers to needles, syringes, scalpels and other instruments capable of puncturing or lacerating skin.
