§ 25-347. Airport.

Latest version.
  • Jefferson Parish, a portion of St. Charles Parish, and the City of Kenner are home to the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (LANOIA). The airport, which occupies approximately one thousand six hundred (1,600) acres, has the smallest footprint of any major U.S. airport.

The City of New Orleans owns and operates the airport while the New Orleans Aviation Board (NOAB), created in 1943, is responsible for the administration, operation, and maintenance of the airport. The board represents the City of New Orleans in all aviation matters in consultation with national, state and international government agencies. It is comprised of nine (9) members appointed by the Mayor of New Orleans and ultimately approved by the New Orleans City Council. Of the nine (9) members, two (2) represent St. Charles Parish and Jefferson Parish (the City of Kenner).

In 2001, the airport served nearly ten (10) million passengers. There are sixteen (16) passenger airlines offering one hundred fifty-six (156) daily flights to forty-two (42) non-stop destinations throughout the U.S., Canada and Central America. The airport is currently ranked 52nd in cargo volume in the U.S.
