§ 32-6. Penalty for defacing or removal of public or permitted signs; penalty for removal causing damage to public property.

  • (a)

    It shall be unlawful to destroy, deface or remove any signs designating public works, buildings, historic sites or school signs; or any sign, placard, poster or notices posted or placed by any department, agency or political subdivision in the discharge and exercise of its duties and functions or as required by rule, resolution, ordinance or statute; or any sign, placard, poster or notices posted or placed by any person with written governmental consent to do so.

    (b)

    Anyone found defacing, destroying or removing any traffic-control signal or traffic sign, street name signs, or signs designating public works, buildings, historic sites or school signs; or any sign, placard, poster of notice posted by any department, agency or political subdivision; or any sign, placard, poster or notices posted or placed by any person with written governmental consent to do so shall be guilty of a misdemeanor punishable by either a fine of not exceeding one hundred dollars ($100.00) or imprisonment not exceeding thirty (30) days, or both, at the discretion of the court.

    (c)

    Anyone found removing a sign, placard, poster, etc. in a manner that causes damage or injury to parish property is further subject to the provisions of Section 20-43 and may be criminally prosecuted under La. R.S. 14:59(a)(10).
